Bakery insurance UK: what cover you need, and why quotes vary
Templates and forms for UK bakeries: Bakery business templates →
TL;DR: A bakery usually carries product liability (a customer is made ill or has an allergic reaction to something you sold) plus public liability (someone is hurt at your premises or stall). Before your first sale, read the food business registration guidance. Taking on staff? Check GOV.UK's employers' liability page first. We don't quote prices here because we couldn't find a dated, citable UK figure for this trade.
The covers that matter most
1. Product liability. Covers claims that a product you made or sold caused harm: an undeclared allergen, a foreign body, food poisoning. Your allergen records matter here.
2. Public liability. Covers injury or damage at your premises, market stall or delivery: a customer slips on a wet floor.
Employers' liability. Covers your staff if they're hurt or made ill by their work. Before a baker, counter assistant or delivery driver starts, read GOV.UK's employers' liability insurance page and ask your broker what you need.
Other covers to ask about:
- Equipment breakdown: ovens, mixers and fridges.
- Stock and spoilage: loss if a freezer fails.
- Business interruption: if a fire or flood shuts the kitchen.
- Home bakers: tell your home insurer you run a business from your kitchen; many home policies exclude it.
- Vehicle use for deliveries: tell your motor insurer.
Why quotes vary
Insurers price a bakery on:
- what you bake and sell, and allergens handled
- where you trade: shop, home kitchen, markets, wholesale
- turnover and staff numbers
- equipment value and stock levels
- limits, excess and claims history
Compare quotes on the same limits and products, and read the exclusions as well as the price.
Step by step: get the right policy
- List what you make. Counter bakes, celebration cakes, wholesale, and anything with nuts or other allergens.
- Say where you sell. Shop, home kitchen, market stall, online and delivery.
- Check what others will ask for. Markets, event organisers and wholesale buyers often ask for product and public liability.
- Compare like with like. Same limits, same products, same excess.
- Keep the records a claim relies on. Allergen and ingredient records, temperature logs, and a complaints and incident record.
Real situations, and which cover answers them
- A customer reports a reaction to a cake. That's product liability. Your allergen records are your evidence.
- A customer slips in the shop. That's public liability.
- The freezer fails overnight. Ask about stock and spoilage cover.

FAQ
What cover do markets and buyers ask for?
Markets, event organisers and wholesale buyers often ask for product and public liability before you trade with them. Before your first sale, read the food business registration guidance, and if you take on staff, check GOV.UK's employers' liability page.
Do home bakers need insurance?
Check with your insurer; home policies often exclude business use, and product liability matters as soon as you sell.
How much does bakery insurance cost?
It depends on what you make, where you sell and your limits. Get like-for-like quotes; we couldn't find a dated, citable UK figure to quote.
