Dog grooming insurance UK: what cover you need and what it costs

Templates and forms for UK dog grooming: Dog Grooming business templates →

TL;DR: A dog groomer usually needs public liability insurance, plus cover for the dogs in your care (often called "care, custody and control", which pays vet fees if a dog is hurt on your table). Taking on staff? Check GOV.UK's employers' liability page first. On cost, Simply Business says 10% of its animal care customers paid £60.54 or less a year for up to £2m public liability (January to June 2026).

Make sure the dogs are covered

This is the one groomers get caught out on.

Public liability is about people and their property. A dog injured while it's in your care may need a separate section. Insurers call it different things:

  • Brooks Braithwaite lists "Care, Custody & Control of Animals", including vet fees, death of an animal, loss by theft or straying, advertising and reward, and animals in transit.
  • Protectivity offers "Care, Custody and Control (Vet Fees)" of up to £100,000 in total, £25,000 per animal.
  • British Pet Insurance (Petcover) offers up to £30,000 of care, custody and control cover alongside up to £5 million public liability.

Do this: ask every insurer, "If a dog is injured on my table, what does this policy pay, and up to how much per dog?" Get the answer in writing.

Also ask about:

  • Non-negligent cover. Some policies pay vet costs when a dog is hurt or taken ill during a groom through no fault of yours. Protectivity lists this.
  • Matted coats. If you shave out a matted dog and the skin is sore afterwards, are you covered?
  • Cats. If you groom cats too, check they're included.

Taking on staff? Check employers' liability first

Before a bather or second groomer starts, read GOV.UK's employers' liability insurance page and ask your broker what you need.

Taking on a Saturday bather, or a family member who helps out? Ask your broker how they'd treat them before their first shift, and keep the certificate where staff can see it.

How much does dog grooming insurance cost?

These are insurer and broker figures, not a market survey. Your price depends on your setup, cover limits and claims history.

Simply Business (dog grooming page)10% of animal care professionals paid £60.54 or less a year (£5.05 a month equivalent)Up to £2m public liability, 1 Jan – 30 Jun 2026. 83% choose £1m, 17% £2m
ProtectivityExample quote of £5.41 a monthBased on a real quote on 5 Jan 2026: £1m public liability, £100,000 care, custody and control, £10,000 loss of keys, £250 equipment, close family cover

Cheap headline prices are usually for the basic cover. Adding vet fees cover, higher equipment limits or staff costs more.

Home salon, mobile van or rented unit?

Tell your insurer exactly where you work.

  • From home: your home insurance may not cover business use or business equipment. Ask your home insurer. Our guide to starting a dog grooming business covers the other home-salon checks.
  • Mobile: tell your van insurer it's used for business, and check if the fitted-out equipment is covered. GOV.UK's vehicle insurance page covers the basics.
  • Rented unit: your landlord may ask for public liability at a set level. Read the lease.

How to buy it, step by step

  1. Write down what you do: dogs, cats, hand-stripping, puppies, elderly dogs, home, mobile, salon, any staff.
  2. Decide your public liability limit. Check any lease or landlord requirement.
  3. Decide how much vet fees cover you want per dog.
  4. List your kit and what it would cost to replace.
  5. Get at least three quotes with the same limits.
  6. Read the exclusions, especially for dogs with health conditions and matted coats.
  7. Keep your certificate on your phone, and diary the renewal.

Records that back up a claim

If an owner says you hurt their dog, your paperwork is your defence:

  • the signed consent form and health questions from the first visit
  • notes on the coat and skin before you started, with photos
  • a matted coat agreement, signed before you shave
  • an incident note written the same day

Where LaunchKit fits

The Dog Grooming Business Documents — Premium (£19.99) has 13 templates. They include a Grooming Consent & Liability Waiver, Pet Health & Vaccination Record, Behaviour Assessment, Matted Coat Agreement, Senior & Puppy Special Requirements and Groom Report Card. They're paperwork, not insurance. A waiver doesn't replace cover.

FAQ

What insurance do I need as a dog groomer in the UK?

Most groomers carry public liability and cover for dogs in their care (care, custody and control, or vet fees). Add equipment cover if your kit is valuable. If anyone works for you, check GOV.UK's employers' liability page.

How much is dog grooming insurance?

Simply Business says 10% of its animal care customers paid £60.54 or less a year for up to £2m public liability (Jan–Jun 2026). Protectivity shows an example quote of £5.41 a month including £100,000 care, custody and control cover. Your price depends on your setup.

Does public liability cover injury to a dog I'm grooming?

Don't assume it does. Many insurers sell care, custody and control as a separate section. Ask what's paid if a dog is hurt on your table.

Do I really need insurance to groom dogs?

Working without public liability and vet fees cover is a big risk, and many owners will ask. If you employ anyone or drive a van for work, check GOV.UK's employers' liability and vehicle insurance pages too.
