How to price your dog walking work: group walks, solo walks and visits
Templates and forms for UK dog walking: Dog walking business templates →
TL;DR: Work out how many walks you can do in a day and what each slot costs you in time and travel, then price group walks, solo walks and visits differently. We haven't found a dated, citable UK price survey for dog walkers, so instead of an "average" this guide shows you how to build your own price list, and suggests checking three or four local walkers' published prices and noting the date.
What goes into your price
- Your time: the walk plus pickup and drop-off.
- Travel: fuel and vehicle costs between homes and walking spots.
- Capacity: how many dogs per walk your insurer, council or park rules and your own judgement allow.
- Kit: leads, towels, vehicle crates, cleaning.
- Overheads: insurance, phone, booking software.
Step by step: work out your price
- Map a day: how many walks, how many dogs each.
- Set your target day income and divide by slots.
- Price solo walks higher than group walks, as they use a whole slot.
- Add puppy and home visits as separate services.
- Offer weekly bundles with a cancellation rule.
- Check the result: a day's walk fees ÷ the hours from first pickup to last drop-off (including driving between homes) shows what you really earn per hour. Tight rounds earn more.
Pricing structures dog walkers use
- Per walk: group and solo priced separately.
- Weekly bundle: steadier income.
- Home visit or pop-in: shorter, priced by time.
- Extras: second dog from the same home, weekend or bank holiday walks.
Keep an eye on turnover
As your round fills, check GOV.UK's Register for VAT guidance to see when it applies to you, and talk to an accountant before it does.
Putting your prices up
Review once a year, and message each owner with the new price and the date it starts, in line with the notice your terms give.

FAQ
Should solo walks cost more than group walks?
Usually, because a solo walk uses a slot that could take several dogs.
How do I charge for a second dog?
Many walkers add a smaller fee for a second dog from the same home. Write it on your price list.
Should I charge for cancellations?
Set a cut-off in your terms, such as the evening before, and say what you charge after it. Apply it the same way to every client.
