Gas Safe registration cost 2026/27: the fees, and how to budget for them

Templates and forms for UK plumbers: Plumber business templates →

TL;DR: From 1 April 2026, a new Gas Safe registration costs £319.96 + VAT (£383.95), renewing a business online costs £139.78 + VAT (£167.74), and the engineer fee is £44.40 + VAT (£53.28). These are the fees published by Registered Gas Engineer, Gas Safe Register's official magazine. Gas Safe Register sets out what you need in place before you apply, so check its joining pages first.

Gas Safe registration fees from 1 April 2026

FeeEx VATInc VAT
New registration£319.96£383.95
Business renewal (online)£139.78£167.74
Business renewal (phone and mail)£171.58£205.90
Engineer fee£44.40£53.28
Physical ID card£15.91£19.09
Replacement physical ID card£15.91£19.09
Updated digital ID card£2.36£2.83
Late renewal charge£137.78£165.34
Work notification (phone)£5.84£7.01
Work notification (online)£3.34£4.01

Three things to know:

  1. Fees go by your renewal start date, not the day you pay.
  2. You choose your ID card type (physical, digital or both) before you renew. By default every business is set to get both, so change it if you only want digital.
  3. Renew online. Phone and mail costs £31.80 more before VAT, and missing the date costs another £137.78 + VAT.

The source doesn't say whether the new registration fee covers your first engineer and a card. Check on your Gas Safe Register account before you budget.

Before you take on gas work: three checks

  1. Read the official position. HSE's gas safety FAQs and Gas Safe Register set out who can do gas work. Read them before you quote for anything on the gas side.
  2. Match your certificates to your work. List the gas jobs you want to quote for (boiler swaps, hobs, meters, commercial catering) and check your certificates of competence cover each one.
  3. Keep plumbing and gas quotes separate until your registration is confirmed, so a customer never assumes you'll do the gas side.

How do you get your certificate of competence?

Ask an ACS assessment centre which route fits you. BPEC describes two starting points:

  • New entrant. You don't have a recognised gas qualification. You go through a training route (BPEC lists "Managed Learning Programmes") with a portfolio of on-site experience, then ACS assessment.
  • Experienced engineer. You hold a recognised gas qualification, or you're renewing an existing or expired ACS certificate. You go straight to assessment.

Each certificate shows the scope it covers and an expiry date. Diary it. Your ID card shows what you're registered for, and customers can check it.

Budgeting your first year

Write down your own figures, line by line:

  1. ACS training and assessment: training centres set their own prices, so get three quotes for the same categories.
  2. New registration fee, plus any engineer fee and ID card (see the table).
  3. Insurance that covers gas work. Tell your insurer you do gas. Our guide to starting a plumbing business covers insurance.
  4. Tools and test kit for the categories you'll work in.
  5. Notification costs: online is £3.34 + VAT a job, phone is £5.84 + VAT.

Then put the yearly costs (renewal, engineer fee, insurance) into your rates. If your costs go up, your hourly rate needs to go up too. Our guide to how much a plumber should charge shows how.

Where LaunchKit fits

The Plumber Startup Guide (£4.99) covers business registration, public liability insurance, Gas Safe registration considerations, van setup and merchant accounts. The Plumber Pricing Calculator — Premium (£14.99) has an expenses tracker, so your registration and renewal fees end up in your prices, not forgotten. Neither replaces Gas Safe Register's own guidance.

FAQ

How much does it cost to be Gas Safe registered in 2026?

A new registration is £319.96 + VAT (£383.95) from 1 April 2026. There's also an engineer fee of £44.40 + VAT and £15.91 + VAT for a physical ID card. Check with Gas Safe Register which of these apply to your application.

How much is the Gas Safe renewal fee?

£139.78 + VAT (£167.74) to renew a business online, or £171.58 + VAT by phone or mail. Late renewal adds £137.78 + VAT.

How much does it cost to notify a job to Gas Safe?

£3.34 + VAT online or £5.84 + VAT by phone, from 1 April 2026.

I have my ACS certificate. Can I start gas work?

Check with Gas Safe Register first. Don't quote for gas work until your registration is confirmed and covers the work.

Can a plumber fit a gas boiler?

Read HSE's gas safety FAQs and check with Gas Safe Register before you touch the gas side. Insurance won't fill a registration gap.
