TL;DR: A counsellor in private practice usually looks at professional indemnity (a client says your work caused them loss or harm) plus public liability (a client is injured or their property damaged at your premises). If you take anyone on, read GOV.UK's employers' liability page first. We don't quote prices here because we couldn't find a dated, citable UK figure for this trade.

The covers that matter most

1. Professional indemnity. Covers you if a client claims your professional service caused them harm or loss, for example an allegation of negligent advice or a breach of confidentiality. Your professional body may set its own expectations; check your membership terms.

2. Public liability. Covers injury or damage that isn't about the counselling itself: a client trips on a rug in your therapy room, or you damage something in a rented room.

Employers' liability. Covers staff if they're hurt or made ill by their work. Before a receptionist or associate starts, read GOV.UK's employers' liability insurance page and ask your broker what you need.

Other covers to ask about:

  • Cyber and data cover: you hold sensitive notes; ask what happens if a laptop is lost or an email account is breached.
  • Legal expenses: help with the cost of defending a complaint or dispute.
  • Contents and equipment: furniture and laptops in your room.
  • Online and cross-border work: if you see clients by video, ask whether clients outside the UK are covered.

Why quotes vary

Insurers price a counselling practice on:

  • the modalities you practise and who you see (adults, couples, young people)
  • whether you work face to face, online or both, and where clients are based
  • your limits of indemnity and the excess
  • whether you rent a room or see clients at home
  • your claims and complaints history

Compare quotes on the same limits and client groups, and read the exclusions as well as the price.

Step by step: get the right policy

  1. List your work. Modalities and client groups, including online and any work with young people.
  2. Say where you see clients. Home room, rented room, clinic or online only; each changes the questions.
  3. Check what others will ask for. Your professional body, a room landlord or an agency or EAP you take referrals from may ask to see your certificate.
  4. Compare like with like. Same limits, same client groups, same excess.
  5. Keep the records a claim relies on. A signed contract, an intake and consent record, and dated session notes kept in line with your privacy notice.

Real situations, and which cover answers them

  • A former client alleges your work caused them harm. That's professional indemnity. Your contract, consent and notes are your evidence.
  • A client slips on the stairs to your room. That's public liability.
  • A notes laptop is stolen. Ask about cyber or data cover, and record it under your GDPR process.

FAQ

What cover do professional bodies, landlords and referrers ask for?

Most ask about professional indemnity, and room landlords often ask for public liability. Check your membership terms and any referral or room agreement. If you take anyone on, read GOV.UK's employers' liability page.

Do I need separate cover for online counselling?

Ask your insurer. Online work and clients outside the UK are common exclusions to check.

How much does counsellor insurance cost?

It depends on your work, limits and history. Get like-for-like quotes; we couldn't find a dated, citable UK figure to quote.
