TL;DR: An after-school club usually carries public liability (a child, parent or visitor is hurt, or the venue is damaged) and professional indemnity (a complaint about the care or supervision you gave). Most clubs have staff, so read GOV.UK's employers' liability page before anyone starts. We don't quote prices here because we couldn't find a dated, citable UK figure for this trade.

The covers that matter most

1. Public liability. Covers injury to children, parents or visitors and damage to the venue, such as a school hall or community centre. Venues usually ask for it.

2. Professional indemnity. Covers claims about the care or supervision you provided.

3. Abuse or safeguarding-related cover. Some childcare policies include or exclude allegations of abuse; ask how your policy handles them.

Employers' liability. Covers your staff if they're hurt or made ill by their work. Before a playworker or helper starts, read GOV.UK's employers' liability insurance page and ask your broker what you need, including for family members who help out.

Other covers to ask about:

  • Equipment: games, sports kit and craft stock.
  • Personal accident: for children attending, if parents expect it.
  • Trips and off-site activities: check they're covered.
  • Business interruption: if the venue becomes unavailable.

Why quotes vary

Insurers price an after-school club on:

  • number of children and age range
  • staff numbers and ratios
  • activities offered, especially sport and trips
  • the venue and whether you share it
  • limits, excess and claims history

Compare quotes on the same limits and activities, and read the exclusions as well as the price.

Step by step: get the right policy

  1. List your sessions. Breakfast, after-school and holiday; age range; activities, trips and sport.
  2. Say where you run. School site, community hall or your own premises.
  3. Check what others will ask for. Schools and venue owners usually ask for a public liability certificate. Read GOV.UK's guidance on registering with Ofsted too.
  4. Compare like with like. Same limits, same activities, same excess.
  5. Keep the records a claim relies on. Registration and consent forms, medical and allergy details, an accident and incident record, and staff records.

Real situations, and which cover answers them

  • A child is hurt during a game. Public liability, with your accident record as evidence.
  • A staff member injures their back setting up. Employers' liability.
  • A parent complains about supervision. Ask whether professional indemnity applies.

FAQ

What cover do clients or venues ask for?

Schools and venue owners usually ask for public liability before you start. Parents may ask about safeguarding and accident cover. If you take on staff, read GOV.UK's employers' liability page first.

Does the school's insurance cover my club?

Don't assume it does. Ask the school and get your own.

How much does after-school club insurance cost?

It depends on numbers, ratios, activities and venue. Get like-for-like quotes; we couldn't find a dated, citable UK figure to quote.
